Church Council
CHURCH COUNCIL Oversees the administration and programs of our church, initiates planning, establishes objectives, adopts goals, authorizes actions, determines policy, receives reports, and reviews all missions/ministries BOARD OF CHILD CARE AUXILIARY Harnesses the resources of the congregation to support the work of the Board of Child Care which provides life-changing services, including foster care, emergency shelters, residential care, schooling for special needs, day care, adoption, and counseling for 1,700 children, youth, and families each year BOARD OF TRUSTEES Oversees church real estate and equipment, provides for insurance, risk management, maintenance and repairs, maintains corporate charter, sets policies for use of facilities, and guides investment policies. BUILDING COMMITTEE AND BUILDING OUR FAITH CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Ad hoc committees created in 2000 to bring PUMC facilities into the 21st century. Building Committee oversees design/permitting/construction and the “Building Our Faith” capital campaign committee raises the funds. CEMETERY Maintains and manages all aspects of cemetery grounds from burials to landscaping and monument maintenance. CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY To support and coordinate the planning and development of programs and activities that will appeal to young people within the congregation and the community and to contribute to their education and the development of their Christian life. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Supervises Sunday School for nursery through high school, and develops additional programs for expanding our knowledge as Christians. COMMUNITY AND GLOBAL MINISTRIES Inspires members to serve persons in need year-round at the Lord’s Table in Gaithersburg, MD, Christ House in Washington, DC, Community Ministries of Montgomery County, and various projects associated with the United Methodist Men and Women’s groups. CONGREGATIONAL LIFE Plans and implements fellowship programs such as Rally Day Brunch and other gatherings. CONNECTIONAL MINISTRIES The United Methodist Church is a Connectional Church. As a denomination, we all work together to accomplish goals we could not meet individually. PUMC supports many mission and outreach programs through the UMW, the UMM, and our Youth Fellowship. We support the General Church Mission outreach through our World Service Apportionment which is a part of our Annual Budget. Beyond the financial support, members of PUMC support: Rebuilding Together, Casa del Pueblo, Washington UMM Mission, M.M. Carroll Home, The Board of Child Care, St. Martini Soup Kitchen, Christ House, Montgomery County Community Ministries, Clothing Ministry, and other mission outreach projects supported by the UMW Strawberry Festival. FINANCE Prepares the annual operating budget, monitors cash flow, determines financial strategies, and sets investment policies. HISTORY AND ARCHIVES Preserves and displays our 151-year history. MEMBERSHIP AND EVANGELISM Engages our membership and potential members in our community through church activities. MUSIC GUILD Supports the material needs of the music ministry of our church. Included are the music programs supporting worship services and fellowship gatherings as well as the Community Concert Series of PUMC. MUSIC MINISTRY Brings high-quality music to church services and other special events and activities. NOMINATING Chaired by the Pastor, identifies leadership needs within the organization of our church and recruits volunteers to fill existing or projected vacancies. PROGRAM OFFICE SUPPORT Provides administrative support at all levels to program areas. STAFF PARISH RELATIONS Manages all aspects of staff relations. STEWARDSHIP Promotes good stewardship, and educates members about the importance of supporting our programs. TREASURER Oversees accounting and provides reports to Finance, Trustees, and Administrative Board. UNITED METHODIST MEN Provides a dedicated ministry for building men spiritually and involving men in the total ministry of our church including holding monthly breakfasts, organizing golf and other sports outings. Thursday night open gym night, supporting The Lord’s Table and Soup Kitchen, and much more. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Provides a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to develop a creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of missions through participation in the global ministries of the Church. Examples of work include organizing an annual craft night for the Children’s Inn at NIH, hosting a book club, organizing the annual Lenten Breakfast, organizing the annual Strawberry Festival, supporting the Board of Child Care through an Annual Coookie Bake, and providing for many fellowship activities. WEBSITE Provides information about Potomac United Methodist Church and its programs and ministries via computer internet communications. WORSHIP Worship is central to our faith community. This committee sees that all elements of our worship services are in place and run smoothly such as the ushers, liturgists, acolytes, crucifers, altar/communion stewards, altar flowers, and coffee hour.
