Potomac United Methodist Women

Purpose
The United Methodist Women (UMW) is a community of women whose purpose is to:

  • Know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ;
  • Develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and
  • Expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the Church.
Our mission work is supported primarily from funds raised at our annual Strawberry Festival in May.

Relationship
The Potomac UMW is directly related to the district and conference organizations of UMW and to the Women's Division of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church.

Worldwide Mission Programs
United Methodist women know that their gifts to mission go around the world. But did you know that you could think of a particular country, and then click on an online map to find what programs or projects we support there? This is a great resource when doing a program or reading about a particular geographic area in the news. And it's very helpful in understanding the breadth of United Methodist Women's support. Membership
Membership is open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the Church through United Methodist Women. The pastor is an ex officio member of the local unit and of its executive committee.

UMW Book Club

The UMW enjoys its Breakfast Book Club each month (except July and August) at 9:15 AM in the Parish Hall Reading Room. All PUMC members are invited to join even if they can’t attend on a regular basis. Non-church member friends are welcome, as well. Although reading the monthly book is recommended, finishing it is not required! At our June meeting we wrap up the year with a potluck movie night in a member’s home; we conclude this enjoyable evening with a discussion of the movie versus the book.

Books are selected by the Club members, other members of the Church, and even our pastor! Following is a list of books we have read: The Painted Veil, Devil in the White City, Wild Swans, Reading Lolita in Teheran, The Mitford Sisters, Kite Runner, A Thousand White Women, Year of Wonders, The Gospel According to Judas, Mayflower, Water for Elephants, Katherine Graham, Babette’s Feast, Queenmaker, The Thirteenth Tale, Shadow of the Wind, The Illuminator, The Namesake, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Dearest Friend A Life of Abigail Adams, Pillars of the Earth, and Those Who Save Us.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 29 @ 9:15 AM, at which time we will discuss Under The Banner Of Heaven by John Krakuer.

Also coming us is the Book Club Potluck June 17th at Juie Karner's house. We'll watch "The Namesake".
