PUMC Stained Glass Committee meeting 9/15/04

Present:  Al Ault, Ada Ault, John Sissila, Henry Kumm, Susan Weinig, Bill Weinig

Bill Weinig presented results of stained glass window inventory completed by John Sissila and Dick Conn, including dimensions and condition/damage assessment of 18 windows.  Findings:  6 with no damage, 3 more with only 1 broken pane, 9 with more damage (missing glass, bowing, or more than 2 cracked pieces).  John recalled Henry Kumm’s report from the previous meeting that an ad hoc consultation with a stained glass repairperson indicated a ballpark cost to fix each window was between $500 and $1,000.

Bill Weinig shared information from Bill Doggett of stained glass window repair businesses from the Faith and Form Magazine, Journal of the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture., and Bill Doggett’s recommendation that the inventory include good, un-retouched photographs of each window, including upper and lower sashes (available but not associated with the current material), size of whole window (currently available), brief description of window’s colors and inscriptions (partially included) and physical condition  (currently available).

General committee consensus is to (1) complete and augment the inventory; (2) develop, describe and vote on a list of issues for review and establishing overall committee consensus and recommendations at the next meeting, and finally (3) take committee recommendations to the Trustees for approval to move forward.

The next steps are to blend the inventory and photographs, and develop a list of “issues” upon which the committee may vote at the next meeting planned for 10/19/04.

The committee does not feel an obligation to use the majority or all of the windows.

The committee’s recommended criteria for selecting desirable windows to be used is:

·  the windows selected are aesthetically pleasing

·  the windows selected can be reasonably incorporated into the new parish hall or possibly the existing church (balcony, parlor or narthax areas) without major renovation or construction to accommodate.

·  the windows selected will be those preferably with no damage or minimal damage to reduce expenses

To cover the expense of restoring and/or installing the windows, the committee discussed selling the windows that are not selected to pay for the ones that are.   The committee members feel a need to be sensitive to the disposition of memorial windows.  If these windows are not used, there is some thought that these particular ones should not be sold, but retained.

The committee will wait until the new Parish building can be visited before further recommendations on the number of windows to use and their location.

An “issues” list will be developed and circulated to stained glass committee members in advance of the 10/19/04 meeting.    At the 10/19/04 meeting the committee members will discuss and vote on resolution of the issues to develop consesus on how to proceed on each item.  After consensus, a project status and recommendation document will be drafted to be presented at next Trustees committee for review and approval.

Respectively submitted,

Susan Weinig, Co-Chair
